Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah - is an American actor, rapper and acrobat. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's mother and father split after Latifah turned ten. Latifah was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was handed to her by her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall forward on her high school team was always a tall girl. The play she played in her high school, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined with the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of a group of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
