Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was an ironworker in Chillicothe on 20 February 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy was the sixth of seven kids. The father of Nancy was a musician and would play records in the family. It had a huge influence upon her growing up. It was clear that she wanted to be a musician by the time she was just four years old. She began developing her talent by singing in the choir at church. Following her win in a talent show on TV around the age of 15, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. The same year, Nancy began to perform in nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for only one semester Nancy quit to become a professional performer. The first album she recorded was with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she was on tour from 1956 until 1958. Nancy made her debut record with Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to go to New York in order to increase her fame. She went to The Big Town, New York in 1959. In less than a month she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records, and that the same year, she debuted her debut single. Guess whom I saw in the present. Capitol Records issued five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. The first was focused on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 together with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top of the charts, and in 1963, she had her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. This brought her a gig in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she was a household name.
